User Guide Text and File Difference Checker
Review changes between the original and revised versions.
Compare two texts or two files of the same format to identify additions, deletions, and changes. Review changes without altering the originals, and save a comparison report.
How to Use
- STEP 01
Add the original and revised versions
Choose pasted text or file selection. Both files must use the same format. Use Swap if you need to reverse their order.
- STEP 02
Choose comparison settings
The default settings work for most comparisons. Specify exceptions only when you need to ignore spaces or similar differences. For file comparisons, review the temporary upload and deletion information.
- STEP 03
Check the differences
Select Check differences to review counts and highlighted additions, deletions, and changes. Use Previous difference and Next difference to navigate, and switch between side-by-side and single-column views.
- STEP 04
Save the report
Select Save report to download the result. When you finish a file comparison, select Finish and delete to end the job.
Comparison Settings and Supported Files
- Pasted text
- Compares the two texts by line and character. This is not an AI tool for comparing semantic similarity.
- Supported files
- Supports two files of the same format: Word (.docx), PDFs with selectable text, CSV, or TXT. Specify the encoding of CSV and TXT files when needed.
- Differences to ignore
- You can separately ignore line endings, trailing spaces, repeated spaces, blank lines, letter case, and full-width or half-width letters, numbers, and symbols. Ignored differences are omitted from the result, so choose only the options you need.
- Matching CSV rows
- Rows can be matched using values in a selected column. Column A is column 1. Select a column containing an identifier or another suitable matching value.
Compare “The deadline is September 10” with “The deadline is September 15” to locate the date change and check for unintended changes elsewhere.
Useful For
Reviewing revised drafts
Check what changed after requesting revisions.
Comparing document versions
Compare Word files or text PDFs before and after an update.
Checking data changes
Review differences in CSV or TXT rows and values.
Processing and Data Handling
Pasted text is compared entirely in your browser. File comparisons temporarily upload files to this site’s server. Data is deleted when saving, finishing, cancelling, or when processing fails. Interrupted data also becomes unavailable at the deadline shown on screen. Review the upload and deletion information before starting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compare image-only PDFs?
Scanned image-only PDFs and OCR are not supported. Use PDFs containing selectable text.
Can I compare Excel files or different formats?
.xlsx files and comparisons between different formats, such as Word and PDF, are not supported. Prepare two files of the same format.
Are the source files changed?
No. A separate comparison report is generated: DOCX for Word, PDF for PDF, and PDF reports for CSV or TXT.
What if comparison fails?
Check the on-screen instructions, supported formats, and text or file-size limits. Server availability may also affect file comparisons.
