0 / 10,000 characters

Basic counts

Manuscript pages use 400 characters per page. Reading time uses 500 characters per minute.

Total characters

All characters, including line breaks and spaces. Emoji and combining characters are counted as one visible character where possible.
0

Characters excluding line breaks

Total characters excluding only line breaks. Half-width and full-width spaces and tabs are included.
0

Characters excluding line breaks and whitespace

Text characters excluding whitespace such as line breaks, half-width and full-width spaces, and tabs.
0

Lines

Counts lines of text. Nonempty text starts at one line; each line break adds one.
0

Manuscript pages

Characters excluding line breaks, converted to 400-character manuscript pages and rounded up.
0

Reading time

Estimated time at 500 characters per minute, excluding whitespace and rounded up.
0

UTF-8 bytes

Data size needed to save or send the text in UTF-8. This may differ from the character count.
0

UTF-16 bytes

Data size of the text in UTF-16. Emoji and some other characters use more bytes than ordinary characters.
0

Bytes in selected encoding

Data size after conversion to the encoding selected above. Useful when choosing an encoding for CSV or other files.
0

Paragraphs

Counts text blocks separated by blank lines as paragraphs. A single ordinary line break does not add a paragraph.
0

Full-width characters

Counts kanji, hiragana, full-width katakana, full-width letters and digits, emoji, and similar characters, excluding whitespace. Combining characters are grouped with their base character. Full-width plus half-width counts equal the character count excluding line breaks and whitespace. This does not measure actual display width or bytes.
0

Half-width characters

Counts characters not classified as full-width, such as half-width letters, digits, and katakana, excluding whitespace. Accents and voiced marks are grouped with their base character. Older browsers may count combining characters separately, but full-width plus half-width counts still equal the character count excluding line breaks and whitespace.
0

Writing checks

Items needing attention are highlighted in a different color.

Line breaks

Number of line breaks in the text. For nonempty text, the line count is this number plus one.
0

Full-width spaces

Number of full-width spaces (U+3000). Useful for checking whitespace that is hard to distinguish visually.
0

Half-width spaces

Number of ordinary half-width spaces. Each space between words is counted individually.
0

Tabs

Number of tab characters, including those entered with the Tab key or included in copied tables and documents.
0

Symbols

Number of characters classified as Unicode symbols or punctuation, including brackets, exclamation marks, currency symbols, and emoji.
0

Environment-dependent characters

Number of characters whose appearance may vary by environment, such as circled numbers, Roman numerals, and unit symbols.
0

Japanese punctuation

Combined count of Japanese commas (、) and full stops (。). Ordinary commas and periods are excluded.
0

Long sentences (over 80 characters)

Number of sentences exceeding 80 characters, delimited by a full stop, exclamation mark, question mark, or line break. A guide to readability.
0

Half-width katakana

Counts half-width katakana and half-width punctuation such as 。 and 、. Useful when checking text before standardizing it to full-width.
0

Consecutive whitespace

Number of runs containing two or more half-width spaces, full-width spaces, or tabs. A mixed run is counted as one location.
0

Unclosed brackets and quotes

Number of locations with unmatched opening or closing parentheses, brackets, Japanese brackets, or quotation marks.
0

Mixed full-width and half-width symbols

Number of symbol types appearing in both full-width and half-width forms, such as ! and !.
0

Keyword counts

Counts exact occurrences in the text, with case sensitivity.

      Paste your text

Type or paste your text into the input area. Counting starts automatically.

    2. STEP 02

Check character counts in the basic statistics. Choose the count that includes or excludes line breaks and spaces according to your submission requirements.

    3. STEP 03

Use the text checks to find extra whitespace and unclosed brackets. Edit the input to update the results.

Use Clear input to check another text. Keep a copy of any text you need before clearing it.

Which character count should I use?

Counts differ depending on whether line breaks and spaces are included. Check the rules used by the submission destination or form first.

    All characters

Emoji and combining characters are counted as one visible character where possible. Other services or document editors may count differently, so also check the destination before submitting.

    Other information you can check

    Manuscript sheets and reading time

The manuscript estimate divides characters excluding line breaks by 400 and rounds up. Reading time uses 500 characters per minute, excluding line breaks and whitespace, and rounds up to whole minutes.

These estimates do not represent actual manuscript layout, reading aloud or speech duration.

    Lines, paragraphs and full-width/half-width characters

Lines are separated by explicit line breaks. Paragraphs are text blocks separated by blank lines. Full-width and half-width counts show the character breakdown excluding whitespace.

Automatic line wrapping to fit the screen does not count as a line break.

    Data size by encoding

Bytes measure the size of text as data. Change the selected encoding to check byte counts for UTF-8, UTF-16LE/BE, Shift_JIS and EUC-JP.

Character counts and byte counts are different. Review any warning messages alongside the results.

    Formatting checks

Check spaces and tabs, half-width katakana, platform-dependent characters, sentences over 80 characters, unclosed brackets or quotation marks, and mixed full-width/half-width symbols.

These checks are prompts for review. They do not detect or correct every spelling or grammar error.

    Useful for

    Reports and applications

Check a required character limit using the count that matches the submission rules, including whether spaces count.

    Blogs and announcements

Review article length and estimated reading time. Use the checks to spot long sentences and repeated words.

    Before filling out a form

Check text length and data size before entering fields with character or byte limits.

    Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent to a server?

Counting happens in your browser. Your input is not sent to a server for counting. Keep important drafts in your own document files.

How much text can I count?

Limits depend on your login status and plan. Check the usage limits and input counter shown in the tool. Follow the message and reduce the text if you exceed a limit.

Why is the count different from Word or another service?

Services handle line breaks, whitespace and emoji differently. This tool shows three counts. For submissions with limits, follow the destination’s counting rules.

Must I fix everything flagged by the text checks?

No. Intentional spaces and symbols are also counted. Review only the parts that need changes for readability or submission rules.

What if the results do not change when I type?

Check the character limit and warnings. If the tool stops responding, keep a copy of your text and reload the page. JavaScript must be enabled in your browser.
